I don't know how old you are, but when my mother was a little girl, "hunky" wasn't a nice thing to call someone, it was like calling someone "spic" or "slope" or "mick." My grandfather was called "hunky" because he was Croatian, and it was fighting words. No one calls anyone "hunky" anymore.
