Well I certainly agree McCourt is no James Joyce. Since I wasn't really looking for it, I don't recall the church being portrayed in any worse light than anything else in Ireland in that book... it just happened that the church was the de facto social institution there. I never knew that Ireland suffered such intense poverty in this century either... it seemed awfully close to famine. Still, McCourt seems to have managed to get an education which is amazing under the circumstances. Malachy McCourt (baby discussed in the book) is a writer too apparently.

I'm sure you know there are all kinds of allegations regarding corruption of the church in Ireland... it seems to be awfully close to a political power similar to Elizabethan times or something. But now high tech is going in and economic prosperity will really change things I predict. I planned on visiting last year but never made it, I'm working with a new company who will probably base European operations there (or at least manufacturing).
