Interesting. I'd like to know more about it. I suspect that the offending lawyer was merely "of counsel" on the basis of having referred the case. It's standard practice in the industry for the referring lawyer to get a share of the pie, but Florida is strict ~ you only get a share if you actually do something in the case. Which I think is the ethical way to handle it. I never give referral fees, nor do I ever ask for one. Needless to say, I'm out of the referral loop.
