I would have him send the message that drug use is wrong and that addicts/users must be treated, not imprisoned. In my lifetime, I've seen horrible personal and family destruction from the overuse of alcohol; much more than I've seen from marijuana or cocaine. Fairness requires either that we decriminalize personal use of narcotics, or criminalize alcohol use on the same basis we criminalize use of marijuana and cocaine. Millions of people who start as casual drinkers become alcohol addicts. Millions! I always have trouble seeing the distinction.
