All the servers should have the best data all the time, under normal conditions. Last week was and (we hope) will be an aberration.

Our server selection is based on more than just a raw ping ad indicated by Ping Plotter. It does take into account current load factors on the servers. The "echo" statistic that is used to sort the list of servers in the ContinuumClient.ini file included a multi-factor load utility function that adds time to the travel-time. So when servers get too heavily loaded with clients it will "discourage" new connections by making other servers appear "closer". This dynamic load balancing works well for us and it should work well for you too. This is why we discourage clients from overriding the natural, almost Darwinian, selection process - it should normally work better if left alone.

The only case where it wouldn't work is if there is packet loss going on somewhere along the route. The "echo" statistic doesn't incorporate that very well right now. If you detect a situation where you are getting packet loss please send us the ping plotter graph or the text output so we can try and route around the problem router.

The server that has the "best" data changes from day to day depending on what happens. We tend to hold a couple of servers offline in each server farm in reserve not serving up data to client connections, protected from the slings and arrows of the Internet. These typically serve as the master copies of the database, but not always.

Our hardware philosophy is to use inexpensive off-the shelf components: Simple dual-processor NT boxes.
