Sort of reminds me of an old BBS Poldark episode where his arch rival is trying to force a bank he frequents out of business with slanderous rumor. As the run on the bank begins with Poldark himself off the scene, his wife takes all the gold in the house and sends servants to deposit it a hundred or so English pounds at a time. The people standing there waiting for their money begin feeling foolish for even being there and the bank lives to lend another day until it is gobbled up by a friendly competitor.

Public perception of small events, such as CB gold sales, can really turn things.
