Interesting details on Fed. funding efforts to treat alcoholism.

Note that with the broad use of treatments alcohol use has been declining nation wide and drunken driving accidents and deaths are down substantially over the last ten years.

Note also that in the case of drugs, where we take the Drug War approach, we have had a twenty or more year outright disaster with more dead than Vietmnam and not one square foot of US territory has been rendered safe from drugs yet. The major achievements of this war to date:

- the drug lords and their sales and marketing employees are fabulously rich
- the jail builders have been busy raising taxes to pay for construction of the largest collection of jails on the planet ... a veritable American Goolag
- our courts are hopelessly clogged and almost non-functional.

Maybe we could learn something here since drugs and alcohol are both similarly addictive substances. Maybe it is time to turn Federal dollars from the "drug wars" to treatments that seem to at least show some sign of progress.

Of course every politician and police chief has been the recipient of large amounts of money to bolster and fight the Drug War so those guys are hooked on the current game plan even though it is a rotten failure.
