Nice summary of the server market. I agree with your analysis that Intel is likely to position Merced against Athlon in the server space.

Where Intel is lacking in design strength they will compensate with the marketing prowess. If Microsoft can do it, so can Intel. The customers will be brainwashed that their very survival is dependent on having the 64-bit headroom. Of course the 64-bit x86 compatible K8 can come out early and spoil the IA64 party, just like K7 took advantage of the Intel's MHz and FP marketing blitz.
