Madge Responds to 3Com's Token Ring/ATM Claims; Cites Delivery of Token Ring-to-ATM Solution and Full LANE Support in ATM Switches, Adapters and Edge Devices a Year Ahead of 3Com
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 2, 1997--Madge Networks (NASDAQ:MADGF) responded today to 3Com's claim of delivering the industry's first complete Token Ring/ATM system solution by pointing out the company's claim is a full year being Madge's Collage(tm) family of networking solutions for Ethernet, Token Ring and ATM. Because Madge is one of the co-authors of the LAN Emulation (LANE) specification -- it wrote the Token Ring section -- it was able to leverage this information to deliver the industry's first Token Ring-to-ATM solution, the Collage 540, in April 1996. Additionally, Madge has been shipping the Collage ATM 25 and Collage ATM 155 adapters since December 1995 as well as the Collage 740 ATM backbone switch since April 1996 -- all with complete LANE support. "On one hand, it is gratifying to see a company like 3Com publicly recognizing the importance of the Token Ring market by attempting to make such a claim, but on the other hand, we are at a loss as to how they could get their facts so wrong," said Jeff King, director of product marketing for Madge's family of Collage ATM solutions. "We applaud their enthusiasm for the good of the market and hope they will own up to their mistake." The following excerpts are from news releases in 1996 and 1997 featuring customers integrating Madge's Token Ring LAN Emulation and ATM solutions: -0- March 25, 1996: "We took our two most heavily loaded rings and tested them with the Collage 540 connecting into an ATM backbone using the Collage 740 and Token Ring LANE. We were able to move large network transactions between end stations and our server on the ATM backbone as if it were on the loof products from desktop connections through LAN and WAN switches and enterprise network management software. Madge is recognized for its customer support without limits, technology excellence and end-to-end networking expertise. It serves its multinational customer base in more than 20 countries worldwide from five major business centers located in Hong Kong, London, San Jose, Tel Aviv and Tokyo. -0- Note to Editors: Madge, the Madge logo, MadgeOne and Collage are trademarks, and in some jurisdictions may be registered trademarks, of Madge Networks Limited or its affiliated companies.
