Digital Island, Inc. (NASDAQ: ISLD), a leading provider of network services for globalizing e-Business applications, announced today relationships with RealNetworks(TM), Inc. (NASDAQ: RNWK), and Inktomi Corp. (NASDAQ: INKT) to build the first global streaming media network. This streaming ability adds to Digital Island's existing e-Network services.
In a pioneering step to provide controlled high-quality streaming video and audio to Internet users worldwide, Digital Island will further enhance its global Intelligent Network by integrating RealNetworks' RealSystem(TM) G2 advanced media delivery and distributed networking technologies and media-caching technologies from Inktomi.
As well as providing an extremely high-quality experience for online viewers and listeners, this advanced global network service will be the first geographically aware streaming service, giving music and video distributors the means to control distribution of their content by country, using Digital Island's TraceWare(TM) technology.
TraceWare, which acts like an Internet atlas, allows media distributors to comply with the commercial terms of their distribution agreements, by enabling the granting or restricting of user access to content on a per-country basis.
