It's interesting that many people who rush to the argument that because if majority of the people want gun control then it is right to pass gun control laws run from the argument that if a majority of the people want creation "science" taught in schools then it is right to require that creation "science" be taught in the schools.

Not that I favor the latter. But I am not particularly impressed with claims that "the majority" wants this or that. Fortunately, we do not have a pure democracy, but a representative democracy under a constitution. There is protection in both these elements from the tyrrany of the majority.

Well the problem I have is that when I speak of the majority I am speaking of the majority in California. I truly believe that the majority in California want gun restrictions and no creation in school. Of course you can get into a discussion of what the majority really wants, since the majority actually doesn't vote, but thats another argument.

Representative democracies are fine with me, but it cuts both ways of course, and thats why you have the restrictive gun laws in California. I guess we will never know if the gov passed the bill because of an anti-gun special interest, or the majority opinion, or what. I can guarantee he has some backing for a law like that though, and if it is a special interest anti-gun minority (which I don't think it is), then eventually the pendulum will swing back to the middle I suppose.

On the creationism issue, any poll etc. that I have seen where the majority opinion claims to want creationism has been a national poll, including the bible belt.
