Some of the side effects of thalidomide were dryness of the mouth and constipation. What is important here is that we sometimes shoot from the hip in banning drugs because of a high profile story, rather than taking scientific research into consideration. Thalidomide seems to have the important property of slowing an over-aggresive immune response, which is the cause of a lot of diseases. I wonder, for instance, if it would be useful in lessening some deaths from pneumonia. Those who die from pneumonia usually die because the immune system fills the lungs with immune cells and fluid, causing the patient to, in effect, drown in his own fluids. He simply can't breath anymore.
