There are vague distinctions between machine gun and automatic weapon. Militarily of course, it ain't a machine gun unless it feeds from a belt. In the popular press the term gets broadened. But the working definition for an automatic weapon ("machine gun" if you're a reporter) I think is more than one round fired for one pull of the trigger. This'll include select-fire rifles and carbines. Current semi-auto firearms have features built into them to block easy conversion to full-auto fire.
The finger cheating trick does not count. Until very recently hand-crank devices were avaliable to simulate full-auto fire from an autoloader. They do this by pulling the trigger very often.
