Michael,

I strongly urge you to make the most of your time in Beijing. When I first went to Beijing in 1991, one could still go into the halls in the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven etc - and take pictures! Nowadays, because of the numbers, visitors can only literally "peek" into history from the outside.

Nothing prepares one for the scale of the formal areas of the Forbidden City. The personal livings quarters are very modest in scale by comparison, and almost "pauperish" compared to the personal quarters of European palaces such as Hampton Court and the Versailles. Take plenty of pictures, as the scenery will never be the same again - entire streets of the Second Ring Road was being demolished as far back as in 1995, with it many buildings absolutely worthy of preservation, perhaps to be replaced by square glass boxes.

Best,
Steve
