Tenchusatsu,

<Now that brings up a very good point. If AMD were truly coming out with a 64-bit architecture of their own, how will it ever get off the ground without industry support?>

If AMD is building a Alpha-compatible product (low-probability), lot of the infrastructure is already there in DEC community but AMD would have to do a lot of work in other areas.

If AMD is building an x86 extension (high-probability), Microsoft is probably closely involved and the massive backward compatibility will kick-start this effort in no-time. If this happens, the concern about support will become not an AMD issue but an Intel issue. IA-64 could be in serious trouble (I am not talking about just Merced at that point). Intel is where it is because of software compatibility issues.

Chuck

P.S.: Some one in management forgot the importance of software base while planning for the future. If you think this is a frivolous topic, or if you do not believe me, talk to some of the Intel CPU architecture folks you have access to.
