L&T bags Rs 100-cr Abu Dhabi contract

Vimala Vasan (BusinessLine)

ABU DHABI, Sept. 7

LARSEN and Toubro has secured a major contract valued at over Rs. 100 crores (approximately dh 100 millions) for building nine 33 kVa sub-stations in the Al Ain area in Abu Dhabi Emirate.

The contract was awarded to L&T in mid-August by the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA). The project, aimed at increasing power capacity to Al Ain city and suburbs, is expected to be completed in 24 months. Senior officials from L&T signed the contract with ADWEA last month, K. Lakshmanan, Area Manager, L&T, told Business Line here.

Mr. Lakshmanan said that apart from the contract, the Indian major was continuing work on the project for building a 125-km long 220 kVa double circuit line from Ruwais to Sila in the Abu Dhabi Emirate. The Rs. 87-crore project contract was awarded to L&T in May by the ADWEA. The project is expected to be completed in 22 months.

L&T, which had been operating in the UAE in the power sector, was also actively looking at projects in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, Mr. Lakshmanan said. The company is also currently working on a Rs. 20-crore project for the Emirates Telecommunications Corporation (Etisalat) for building self-supporting radio towers.

Earlier, L&T was involved in two power projects in the Abu Dhabi Emirate. One was for the construction of a 33 kVa overhead line from Mirfa to Abu Al Abiyat island and the second was for construction of a 33 kVa transmission line from Al Qua'aa to Umm Al Samool. The turnkey projects involved design, supply, fabrication and commissioning.

L&T began operations in the UAE in 1993 with a contract to build a 33 kVa sub-station in Ras Al Khaimah Emirate for the Ministry of Electricity and Water. The company has an area office in Abu Dhabi which oversees its operations in the UAE.
