<Some one in management forgot the importance of software base while planning for the future. If you think this is a frivolous topic, or if you do not believe me, talk to some of the Intel CPU architecture folks you have access to.>

"Forgot the importance of software base?" Let's see, Merced has IA-32 compatibility built into hardware, and IA-64 operating systems must support both IA-32 and IA-64 software. Intel is driving the Merced PR engine primarily to build up industry support, especially the software side of things. Intel has also created that IA-64 fund to prime the software development pump a little more. Let's not forget about extensive work with compilers and simulators, an IA-64 developer's guide published on their web site, and a whirlwind development effort with Microsoft to boot 64-bit Windows 2000 onto first silicon with 460GX.

What gave you the impression that Intel doesn't know the importance of a strong software base?
