<The fact that they ignored x86 platform with dreamy IA-64 eyes!>

They did? Guess all my friends in Willamette-ville can go home now, since Intel is obviously dumping x86 in favor of IA-64.

Look, it's that market segmentation thingy again. There are two different aspects of the market being served here. First of all, IA-64 is going to be pushed onto the server and high-end workstation markets first. For all other markets, like desktop, mobile, value, and set-top, IA-32 (x86) will be carrying that for quite a while. And even in the high-end markets, there will be two camps: one who is willing to take the plunge into a hot new technology with an admittedly immature software base, and the other who won't dare move until the software base has been established. Merced and McKinley will serve the first camp, while Xeon and Foster will serve the second one.

It's a pretty risky strategy, no doubt, especially since the two paths could be at odds with one another. But I'm confident that it will work.
