PSINet Advances Nationwide DSL Rollout Agreements With Covad, Rhythms and Network Access Solutions Provide Nationwide Coverage
Service Will Be Available in 60 Cities in Early 2000
HERNDON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 8, 1999-- PSINet Inc. (Nasdaq: PSIX - news), the first and largest independent commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP), today announced that PSINet DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) service is now available in 21 major metropolitan markets. The markets are: Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland, Raleigh/Durham, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco and Washington, DC. The launch follows a successful trial of the service in partnership with Covad Communications (Nasdaq: COVD - news) in Los Angeles that was completed on August 31.
DSL technology allows Internet connectivity over existing copper infrastructures that can be implemented at a lower cost than traditional circuits. It uses a line-coding scheme that allows high-speed connections through ordinary two-wire copper telephone lines, thus helping to eliminate the ''last mile'' bottleneck to high-speed communications. The connection is up to 40 times faster than the speed of traditional dial-up modems. DSL will reduce local loop charges and installation time compared to traditional dedicated connections, while providing a seamless integration of DSL technology and PSINet's premiere services such as PSINet Dedicated Access and PSINet IntraNet. Rates for corporate connectivity begin at $159 per month and vary depending on the type of service implemented.
Working in partnership with Covad, a leading broadband provider, PSINet is offering DSL in a standard format as well as in an enhanced solution designed to provide quality and value to PSINet's global commercial customers. Covad recently announced its intention to reach 40% of US homes and businesses by the end of 2000. This expansion will add 49 new metropolitan markets and 19 states to Covad's national footprint. |
