September 8, 1999 (TOKYO) -- At World PC Expo 99, Sony Corp. and Melco Inc. each
showcased a prototype of an i.Link (IEEE1394)-capable CD-RW drive.

Sony's CD-RW drive writes at a maximum 4x speed on
both CD-R and CD-RW, and reads at maximum 24x
speed on CD-ROM/CD-R and at 8x on CD-RW. The
drive is only for the company's VAIO notebook line
with Windows 98 Second Edition. Its release date and
price are not decided.

Melco's CD-RW drive writes at a maximum 4x on CD-R
and 2x on CD-RW. It reads at a maximum 24x on
CD-ROM, and a maximum 16x on both CD-R and
CD-RW. The drive, capable of data transfer at
400M/200M/100Mbps, is hot-plug enabled so it can be
unplugged with power kept on.

At Melco's booth, visitors will find its i.Link-capable
magneto-optical (MO) disk drive and hard disk drive.
The MO drive, with a storage capacity of 640MB, is
slated for sale in mid October and the hard disk drive in
mid September. Melco says its prototype products are
all in black, but they will be in VAIO colors when they
hit shop shelves.
