(DSG.) Descartes and Research In Motion Form Alliance to Provide
Wireless Dynamic Optimization Solutions for Delivery and Field
Operations

WATERLOO, Ontario, Sep 8, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

Lets companies conquer the final mile of the supply chain using
RIM wireless handhelds and Descartes intelligent fulfillment
applications

The Descartes Systems Group Inc. (Nasdaq:DSGX) (TSE:DSG), a leading
provider of e-business solutions, today announced a strategic alliance
with Research In Motion Limited (Nasdaq:RIMM) (TSE:RIM) to provide
wireless mobile communications solutions for delivery and field
operations. RIM's Inter@ctive(TM) Pager and BlackBerry(TM) product
lines will be offered by Descartes as part of its DeliveryNet(TM)
solutions to provide dynamic scheduling and optimization of delivery
and service activities based on real-time, event-driven business data.

Using RIM's software development tools, Descartes offers
industry-specific customer fulfillment solutions that run on RIM
devices. Mobile field personnel enter information on their wireless
handhelds, automatically transmitting data to the home office via
wireless networks. Dispatchers can use the same networks to send
updated information and instructions to drivers and service technicians
using RIM's Inter@ctive Pager or BlackBerry wireless email solution.
Business settings as diverse as e-commerce home delivery, field
service, direct store delivery and less than truckload pick up and
delivery can benefit from the ability to re-optimize routes and
schedules to accommodate real time changes in their business. Customers
can be dynamically advised of revised delivery or service appointments.

"RIM's innovative wireless technology is being used as a DeliveryNet
component to enable new optimization of the final frontier of the
supply chain - delivering directly to consumers' homes and businesses,"
Peter Schwartz, chairman and CEO for Descartes. "Descartes and RIM are
providing superior customer fulfillment and delivery solutions at a
competitive price, putting wireless communications solutions in the
hands of all types of service and delivery operations. The real-time
optimized data benefits of this solution will allow our customers to
provide superior service to their customers, improve operational
efficiencies and grow their business."

"The marriage of wireless technology and e-business applications is a
natural fit," said Jim Balsillie, chairman and co-CEO of Research In
Motion. "The time-value of data in delivery and field operations
creates the need for real-time mobile solutions. DeliveryNet solutions,
together with RIM's advanced wireless products, should prove to be a
source of significant competitive advantage for Descartes' customers."
