Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi has hit back at critics who have questioned her right to become prime minister because of her Italian birth.

In excerpts from a rare TV interview carried by the national news agency, the Press Trust of India, Mrs Gandhi said her political opponents had no faith in democracy or the voters if they thought people of foreign origin should not be allowed to contest elections. ......
