Perhaps because my mother's family was and is large and very inclusive--related is what matters, not whether it is by blood or marriage--I have been blessed with a number of such relationships. I still have a few close friends from high school and college, including one of my professors! The father of the child I didn't have has remained a cherished friend for 30 years; he works crazy hours so we don't see much of each other but talk on the telephone at least once a week. My current "squeeze" has been a friend for about 20 years; our current relationship grew out of the friendship.

Although I continue to discover new friends, many of my friendships are at least 20 years old and remain intense as family.
