Nortel Networks beats Cisco in ATM sector
08-SEP-1999 MAIDENHEAD, UK. ? For the second year running, Nortel Networks has been ranked the number one vendor for WAN (Wide Area Networks) equipment sales in Europe to both enterprises and service providers.
The rating, with a 24.4 per cent market share, comes in a recently published report - "WANs: Europe, 1998 - Market Statistics"- by the independent industry information organisation Dataquest (part of GartnerGroup Inc.).
In one sector, ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) switches, which makes up 60 per cent of the cell-based switch market, Dataquest reports that Nortel Networks has overtaken Cisco, moving into the lead with 26.6 per cent of the market, and revenues of some $162.6 million.
The Dataquest Market Statistics report for 1998 analyses the Europe WAN market covering ATM and frame relay switches, X.25. time-division multiplexers and enterprise and carrier networks.
The report names Nortel Networks as Number One in Europe in four other key WAN market categories:
? Backbone equipment, with a 28.3 per cent market share.
? Multiservice cell-based switch, where Nortel has extended its lead in what is the fastest growing section of the backbone market, through total switch sales for IP (Internet Protocol), ATM and frame relay.
? Frame relay, in which Nortel increased its advantage with a 44.3 per cent market share, up from the previous year's 35.8 per cent. Frame relay accounts for some 38 per cent of the cell-based switch market in Europe.
? Packet switches - Nortel Networks continues to dominate in Europe, taking top spot again with a 31.9 per cent market share.
The European packet switching market is evenly split between carrier and enterprise, with 48.3 per cent of sales to enterprises and 51.7 per cent to the service provider infrastructure. |
