Bob Wolff--glad to have another professor here (just a brief twinge of regret that you're not the international bridge star of the same name) and agree that reading the whole thread is by far the best way to gain thorough knowledge of the company. One can skip through the outdated and irrelevant quite quickly, and build a good research file with the others.

My reference for the type of students you refer to is the "McDonald's model"--since the only jobs they've held tend to be on the level of the burger-fryer at McDonald's, I think that they assume that all jobs --including that of being a student--consist of being told exactly what to do and how to do it, and then being rewarded when they actually follow instructions. These are the students who are always puzzled and upset when they get the C's they deserve, since they never conceptualize the possibility of anything different from what they did--contrast "the A-student syndrome," where the individual can conceptualize all too well all the possibilities they didn't accomplish, and therefore assume that what they did accomplish can't possibly be good enough to deserve the A they get. One of the hardest things to do is to give both of these groups the necessary guidance and support to try to get them to get a better view on reality--I, at least, think that if I've got about 3/4 of the class working on the assumption that they are ultimately responsible for their own education (who else is going to be hurt by their failure?), and that the standards for evaluation are set at a level that is realistic and attainable, then I've done about the best I can.
