Allen also put in a bid for the Pittsburg Penguins when they were for sale. His basketball stadium in Portland was built for both basketball and hockey. I believe he's on the short list of expansion candidates for the NHL, but they've grown a bit too fast and don't seem to be in any mood to expand. The alternative is to buy an existing team.

A bid from Allen is not good news for any city that wants to keep its hockey franchise, because he's made it clear that he wants a team in his arena in Portland.

This is also why I expect Charter and AT&T to do a trade for the Portland cable franchise once the regulatory mess there is cleared up.
