I saw Roy Orbison in concert in 1965. The love of my high school life and I begged for special permission to drive the 56 miles from Lexington to the big city of Roanoke. We ate at a hamburger joint on the way. I can even remember what we wore. He had on white jeans and a blue cotton shirt and I had on a navy blue sleeveless knit top and a tight navy and white checked skirt and flats. His high school ring, filled with wax, was on my finger, and he was wearing a silver ID bracelet I'd given him. We had his family car because his wouldn't have gotten us there. It was a black 1950s Plymouth that barely ran, but was cool.

After he broke my heart, every time I heard "Love Hurts" I would start to cry. But not as bad as I did when "I Got You,Babe, " came on the radio. That was our song. There is just no love like that first one.
