The points you make are quite thoughtful and you have put your finger on one of the issues that run through many of the coffee shop threads here on SI. It is not a narrative, really; it is a dialectic construct of extremes. Those of us who are people of faith and also people of reason often find ourselves shunted aside equally by the aggressive atheists and by the aggressive "Christians" as though we did not exist. It is a most unnerving experience, I assure you.

At one time I thought of majoring in mathematics while in college. The further I went, the more there was a touch of the mystical. I dismissed the experience as simply a reflection of my own thinking processes until a friend, a theoretical mathematician, commented that it was mathematics that had brought him to an appreciation of the probability of some sort of being--God, Gaia, whatever. He said that although he practices no formal religion, he has begun to study the mystics and to meditate. Interesting that I hear that some physicists seem to have had the same experience.
