A new ERICY initiative for wireless products in autos (a la OMNITraks theme with a twist) Ericsson Forms Car Communications Venture With Mannesmann By Linda Andersson at Bloomberg News 08 September 1999 Ericsson AB, the world's third-largest cellular phone maker, said it formed a venture with Germany's Mannesmann AG to develop wireless communications products for the automotive industry. Sweden's Ericsson and Mannesmann VDO, the car arm of the engineering company that owns Germany's biggest mobile phone network, will jointly develop equipment that combines in-car navigation, telematics, communication and entertainment. Ericsson only last month said it and Swedish truckmaker Scania AB would develop wireless Internet products for communication in cars. It expects more than 10 million phone components to be built into cars by 2003 in Europe and the U.S. "To implement our communications solutions in the automotive environment we feel it is important to team up with suppliers who know the automotive industry so we can focus on our core competence, which is communications," said Jan Ahrenbring, head of marketing at Ericsson's mobile phone unit. The equipment will be based on wireless application protocol, a standard for surfing the Web over mobile phones; Bluetooth, a radio technology that links devices without cables; and other new technologies.
