Cult in itself does not denote anything bad, it's just another word that adopted a different meaning. Technically, when Christianity was in the minority, it was itself a cult movement, Michelle. As for whether or not the book is biased, do some background research on the author/authors to see what doctrines that author believes. I have met many professors and religious writers that like to point out that many religions from before Christianity share strong similarities to it, but this was at a liberal arts college and as such had a strong bias against the religious right. One of the main texts we read for the course was written by another professor at that college, in fact.
