Saved by a smiley, Joan! MM is just fine.

I am very fond of mushrooms (esp. grilled portobella) but leave the baloney to Cousin Bobby who has had sort of a "thing" for fried baloney sandwiches all his life. Not his only quirk.

It may amuse you to know that I once advised and wrote for a prominent military commander who enjoyed calling me his "Baloney Bomber."

Add me to the list who know next to nothing about the North Caucasus. By the way, if you throw in East Timor, it's possible we could soon have two nasty little wars in places even Jeopardy finalists would have trouble locating.

I'm wondering if Russia might try to use "air" on any large scale in Dagestan. Given the flimsiest pretext, they might quite enjoy shoving NATO's bombing of Serbia right straight up western noses. I doubt it would have lasting effect, but there is an element in the Kremlin that would like to take credit for doing something "manly" for Mother Russia.

I don't see much likelihood of lasting intervention on the ground -- poorly equipped, trained and motivated ground forces and a home front with bitter and constraining memories of Afghanistan.

All strictly personal opinion. Would enjoy hearing your informed one.

In some ways, I believe the E. Timor situation promises more immediate tragedy than Dagestan. I estimate very significant casualties and virtually no effective intervention. SecDef Cohen has already said no U.S. troops; maybe some logistical or comm support. Sound familiar?

Oh well, all of these mere skirmishes compared with blood spilled today trying to get slight variance from my "walled city's" architectural review board.
