We have strayed a bit from the original point, which was, what motivates a person to act virtuously? If a person knows that his world is bigger than just the sensations he experiences, he is more inclined to act in virtuous manner. If a person believes he is an amorphous collection of cells that has no soul, he is more inclined to behave ruthlessly.
