just because commissions are the biggest chunk of Etrades revenue doesn't mean they're making money on the trades. of course, maybe that's reflected in the fact they're not making any money and their stock has gone from the 70's to the mid 20's.... if you don't think they sell out of inventory and markup, you're kidding yourself. further, i'd be willing to bet that many of your trades were done "off-exchange". i also wonder how many limit orders are put in and not executed because they couldn't get their markup.

it never ceases to amaze me how naiive people are when thinking they are getting a "free lunch".
