FWIW, I attended the annual meetings of both INCY and AFFX recently.
As I recall, INCY's model is to find and sell genomic data("libraries") to customers; this requires updating of the
libraries from time to time as INCY processes more data. AFFX's model is to sell the search tools (chips that analyze bits of dna en masse).
This eliminates the need for AFFX to come back and update any databases. There is probably a market segment of companies/institutions/universities that could afford AFFX technology that would hesitate the pay the INCY subscription fees. At least, the marketing AFFX people I talked with thought their model was more sustainable. I agree though that the price differential has grown quite large.
