Tut Systems Provides IP Infrastructure Connecting Residential VoIP Gateways To
Clarent's VoIP Command Center

September 7, 1999 08:01 AM
PLEASANT HILL, Calif. and REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ --
Tut Systems TUTS and Clarent Corporation CLRN today announced successful tests
between Tut-provided voice over IP (VoIP) residential gateways and the Clarent
Command Center with Tut's Expresso MDU system providing the underlying IP
network. The tests validated interoperability and the use of the emerging Media
Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP), for linking remote VoIP gateways to central VoIP
call agents.

Together, Tut and Clarent products can allow service providers to offer bundles of
voice over IP and high-speed Internet services over a common IP infrastructure to both
commercial and residential subscribers. In conjunction with Tut's Expresso MDU
systems, the companies' combined solution specifically addresses both commercial and
residential users located in multi-tenant properties -- such as apartments, hotels,
dormitories and multi-tenant commercial buildings.

"The benefits of adding voice to new high-speed internet access devices going into
homes and businesses are tremendous," said Richard Heaps, Chief Operating Officer,
Clarent Corporation. "Tut's Expresso systems provide high-speed IP connectivity
throughout multi-tenant unit (MTU) properties and will bring the cost and feature
benefits of VoIP all the way to the end user."

"As the leader in providing backbone voice over IP systems, Clarent is an ideal partner
for Tut," said Sal D'Auria, president of Tut Systems. "With Tut's Expresso systems
delivering consolidated VoIP traffic to Clarent-enabled backbone networks, any end
user can access global VoIP networks and services. By providing a last-mile voice over
IP infrastructure all the way to the end user, Tut and Clarent can offer service providers
a platform for advanced telephony services such as Caller ID prompts over the Internet
and remote PBX extensions for telecommuters, while maximizing their revenue per
subscriber."

Tut's MTU Market Leadership

Since the launch of Tut's Expresso MDU high-speed Internet access product in
September, 1998, Tut has become the leading provider of such high-speed systems for
the multi-dwelling unit (MDUs) -- or the hospitality and apartment markets. Today, Tut
is leveraging its success in the hospitality and apartment markets to aggressively target
the large multi-tenant commercial market (MCUs) such as shared tenant office buildings,
shopping malls, business parks, and industrial buildings. "We see the MCU market as an
important natural expansion of our existing target markets," said Sal D'Auria. "We
expect that our future products will be designed to take advantage of opportunities
within the overall MCU market as well as compliment our existing Expresso and XL
product lines which already serve this space." Tut's interoperability testing with Clarent
is evidence of another step it has taken to offer advanced, bundled services to both
MDU and MCU markets, that is, to the entire MTU market.

About the Clarent Gateway

The Clarent Gateway serves as the bridge between the Public Switched Telephone
Network (PSTN) and the Internet Protocol (IP) network, converting and mixing voice,
fax and data streams for transmission across the networks. The Clarent Gateway works
with major telephony analog and digital telephony interfaces and supports SS7 and C7
signaling. A single gateway can process up to 120 simultaneous calls, but, with server
groupings, the network can handle thousands of simultaneous calls.

About the Clarent Command Center

The Clarent Command Center is a client-server architected ODBC compliant data
processing engine which provides dynamic call routing, network management, billing,
call rating, subscriber management, and other operational support functions.

About Tut's Expresso MDU Systems

Tut's Expresso MDU is a "single box" access concentrator solution designed to sit in the
wiring closet of hotels, apartment buildings, multi-tenant commercial buildings and
dormitories to provide cost-effective, "plug and play" provisioning of high-speed Internet
access and data services. Expresso MDU incorporates Tut's HomeRun(TM) home
networking and LongRun technology to deliver data at 20 times faster than regular
dial-up modems over existing telephone wires without interruption of voice services.

About Clarent Corporation

Clarent Corporation is a premier provider of scaleable, IP telephony products to
carriers and Internet service providers around the world. Clarent's intelligent architecture
and the Clarent Command Center enable Clarent products to route, manage,
inter-connect and terminate high volumes of calls for service provider customers
including the world's largest long distance telecommunication companies. According to a
Cape Saffron report published in 1999, more minutes travel across Clarent-enabled
networks worldwide than those of any other equipment supplier.*
