In the historical, geopolitical scheme of things, it should happen, it must happen if there is any rationality on this planet, and to encourage further developments such as those that led to the break-up of China Telecom into four pieces, notwithstanding the opposition of the MII Minister. BUT, the Republicans for their own short-sighted, short-term goals will try to place bombs in the road, even though their longstanding friends in Taiwan now support WTO membership for the PRC. Taiwan is now the leading source of investment capital in the PRC. Republicans could take a lesson in intelligent self-interest. On the negative side of the ledger, Clinton grows weaker by the day: Reno is close to comatose with her administration-defending obstruction of justice tactics, Clinton must negotiate over his veto of tax-cuts and Dems are beginning to position for 2000.
