Speaking of oldtimers, I had a chat about Y2K with my 85 year old father a few weeks ago. We talk on the phone every other Saturday. I had decided a long while ago that I would not bring the subject up but would discuss it with him if he mentioned it.

I changed my mind because I wanted to get an oldtimer's view of Y2K. I think it's important to interact regularly with people who have different perspectives and different ways of processing information. (I believe that if we only talk to people like ourselves, we quickly get tunnel vision and eventually get stupid.) I had reported earlier to the thread what the folks at my office thought about Y2K (yawn). I asked an friend who works on weekends at the Renaissance Festival what that distinct subculture was saying about Y2K (yawn). So I figured I'd ask my father, who lives in a retirement community in the Southwest.

The exchange was something like this:

Dad, are you prepared for Y2K?
Yes, I have a case of wine and 3 cases of beer.
But, Dad, have you some water and batteries in case there's a utility failure?
Oh, that Y2K! Duh, er, ah. I always keep a couple of bottles of water in the car in case I get stuck in the desert.
So the guys at the pool aren't talking about Y2K.
No, haven't seen any interest.
At which point I changed the subject.
