Nortel Networks yesterday announced an agreement to
supply Swedish service provider Telia with networking
gear for its national backbone.

According to terms of the deal, Nortel will supply Telia
with its Passport 15000 Multiservice switch, which is
designed to transport information based on
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) technology. Telia
officials say the equipment will be used to offer
customers both frame relay and ATM services.

Although terms of the contract were not disclosed,
Nortel officials say the deal is significant because it
solidifies the company's status as a major supplier of
ATM equipment in the European market.

In addition to the Passport 15000 line, which also is
capable of transporting data based on the Internet
Protocol, Telia also will purchase technical and
professional services from Nortel, according to company
officials.
