BEA Joins HP's 5nines:5minutes Alliance

BEA TUXEDO Plays Key Role in HP's High-availability Solution By Providing 'Always Available, Always Reliable' Internet Transactions

SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS - news), a world leader in mission-critical Web and transaction middleware solutions, today announced it is joining Hewlett-Packard Company's (NYSE: HWP - news) 5nines:5minutes alliance, which is composed of industry leaders HP, Oracle, Cisco, EMC and as of today BEA and SAP. The initiative is geared to provide enterprise customers with high availability e-commerce and enterprise computing solutions. Through its BEA TUXEDO software, BEA is contributing the core e-commerce transaction processing platform to support the 5nines:5minutes alliance's goal of delivering solutions that achieve 99.999 percent end-to-end availability. (Please see today's release from HP titled, ''HP's 5nines:5minutes Alliance Delivers the Highest Availability for the Internet Age.'')

BEA TUXEDO provides the 5nines:5minutes alliance with a critical component that addresses key requirements for e-commerce applications on the Web, including high availability and manageability. As a key component to the 5nines:5minutes solutions, BEA TUXEDO will process, monitor and manage transactions generated from applications running on the 5nines:5minutes solutions -- in essence, providing a layer that routes and delivers transactions across the entire enterprise system, even in the event of a failure elsewhere in the system. BEA TUXEDO will be tightly integrated with key HP management, monitoring and high availability and technologies, including MC/Service Guard, Event Monitoring Service (EMS), HP OpenView IT/Operations (ITO) and other HP solutions. The tight integration between BEA TUXEDO and these HP solutions will provide customers building high availability applications with enhanced manageability of the complete system as well as benefits for reduced risk of downtime and faster time to market.

As a part of the alliance, HP is also announcing new Mission Critical Support services for BEA products, including proactive and reactive support services, assistance with planning and tuning, change and patch management, remote monitoring security planning and implementation.

''Our strategy is to enable the transactions that deliver 'always available, always reliable' e-commerce, so it was a natural fit when HP asked us to provide the e-commerce transaction platform for its 5nines:5minutes initiative,'' said Bill Coleman, chairman and CEO of BEA. ''We are collaborating to give customers end-to-end solutions -- from development to deployment and management -- so that customers can more easily create e-commerce systems for the new Internet economy.''

''With BEA on board, the 5nines:5minutes alliance again raises the bar for high availability enterprise computing,'' said Janice Chaffin, vice president and general manager of HP's Business Critical Computing Business Unit. ''With solutions from HP and the other 5nines:5minutes partners, BEA TUXEDO will help ensure the highest end-to-end availability levels for customers.''

Syntellect Interactive Services, a leading provider of hosted services and outsourced telephony/Internet applications, is taking advantage of a 5nines:5minutes alliance solution incorporating BEA TUXEDO, as well as solutions from alliance partners HP and Cisco Systems, Inc. ''BEA TUXEDO is a proven technology in our data center, and BEA's move to join this alliance simplifies my job further by ensuring that 5nines:5minutes solutions are tested and certified before we get them,'' said Dave E. McCampbell, vice president of engineering at Syntellect Interactive Services. ''The addition of BEA TUXEDO significantly bolsters the HP 5nines:5minutes alliance as a source of end-to-end, high availability solutions for us.''

BEA's commitment to the 5nines:5minutes alliance expands the strategic alliance between BEA and HP, announced in April 1999, which represents a three-year, $100 million commitment from HP to BEA for development, sales and support of integrated cross-platform solutions for enterprise customers. The 5nines:5minutes alliance builds on the goals of the existing BEA and HP strategic relationship, for providing customers with a complete software infrastructure for building reliable, high-performance e-commerce solutions and integrating enterprise applications.

HP's 5nines:5minutes Alliance

The 5nines:5minutes alliance is composed of industry leaders HP, Oracle, Cisco, EMC and as of today BEA and SAP -- companies committed to developing and delivering the highest availability solutions for the Internet age. By implementing 5nines:5minutes alliance end-to-end solutions, customers benefit from highly available, secure and scalable infrastructure, while at the same time maintaining the flexibility of an open system.
