Ben et al, anyone got a URL that shows ave. gals. of gas consumed per capita in the US? It would be interesting to combine this with the price of gas to look at the trend of spending on gas, per household. My own guess is that number is approximately flat, or climbing. As you mention, the trend has been towards vehicles that consume more gas, as gas prices declined. For completeness, I guess we'd need to know the average miles driven per household as well ...

Back of the napkin calculation: at $1.50 per gallon, and one fill up a week, and a 20 gallon tank (obviously not a VW) that works out to $1560/year -- probably less than parking fees and car insurance in NYC. :)
