Until reading this post, I had not thought of myself as a "people collector." Hmmm. Again, perhaps it has something to do with coming from a large family that was always so inclusive. I have myself been surprised when I stop to think of the people with whom I stay in touch and how many have persisted with me when I have started to drift away, off on other concerns.

Although our lives diverge widely and there is plenty of drifting apart as the commonality of shared workspace (as an example) ceases to be there, yet it does seem that there is a "stickiness" to the friendships I form. In fact, I have to leave soon to talk with someone who is just leaving the firm where I worked. We were on the phone until one o'clock in the morning the day she resigned. One would think that we have very little in common--she is black, recently divorced with a mess of kids, and grew up in the projects; yet she said on the phone that night, "Somehow, I feel close to you and I can relax and be myself with you."

[Edit: This kind of "stickiness" in friendships with people whose lives and interests diverge widely has broadened my store of information and my own interests immeasurably too.]
