Cold Mountain is about the civil war... a deserter trying to return to his home and former lover, meanwhile she has problems of her own trying to survive in recent poverty... these are the last days of the war so the south is really in a state of bedlam. Its a historical novel and a love story so maybe more of a girl's book, although it was written by a man. Maybe read the amazon reviews first... I would say if you get it, just read the first 2 chapters and if it doesn't suck you in, then its not for you. There is a paperback version now.
