JDN, from my perspective the handwriting is on the wall in two regards:

1. SUNW is reinventing itself and part of that is to embrace a business model where it is in part a "utility" company. I see this in their promoting a monthly charge for the Sun Ray rather than an actual purchase. This is truly a telco approach and makes SUNW seem more like the modern day Bell Telephone of network computing. The appliance is constantly equated with "webtone" and the telephone ease of use. The Sun Ray is truly the new "phone". It is guaranteed for 5 years because it lacks the need for upgrades both hardware and software. That's one reason why SUNW abandoned the JavaStation model. It would need equipment upgrades to improve performance. In the "hot desktop" model now embraced by Sun, the server is king and that is done behind the scenes by SUNW. All the complexity is hidden in the network the way Bill Joy envisions it.

2. AOL announced back in April that they were in an arrangement to sell or give free to subscribers "internet phones" that have been developed by Alcatel. The timetable was I believe for the fall. I see every reason to believe that the Sun Ray would eventually be a possible alternative to this, but perhaps more targeted to small businesses via not just AOL but ISP's as well. SUNW's (netscape's) i-planet (webtop.com) software would work with the Sun Ray. With VoDSL coming into its own, ISP's that provide DSL service could provide application software to small businesses as well, for a monthly fee.

Clearly this would be an exploding market for SUNW. Not only the Sun Ray, but i-planet as well, as high-speed internet access proliferates and more and more software migrates to the internet via a portal. Network services on the internet will be the new rapidly expanding growth domain along with bandwidth. I see StarOffice as just a catalyst. A good one and well focused, but just a catalyst none-the-less.

JMO,
Michael
