john, re: dogs of the dow....i spent a day and a half digging around in the library a couple of yrs ago...old wsj's on microfiche....my rough calculations after transaction costs and taxes reduce the return pretty well....my conclusion is that it is a valuable tool esp since it did well in the 73-74 debacle but most of the time only in an ira.....and at a discount broker so transaction costs dont eat up gains.....and it appears to do better than most mutual funds.... you are correct how the comparisons are misleading....it is nice to revisit calculating returns, as you are helping me do right now, every once in awhile to refresh focus...... lars
