Digital Microwave Corporation Opens Brazil Factory
Ceremonies in Brazil Mark Opening on September 9, 1999
SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Microwave Corporation (Nasdaq: DMIC) announces the opening of the Campinas, Brazil, factory which is the Company's new Latin America center for manufacturing of digital microwave radios used for transmission of voice, video and data in telecommunications networks. The factory will produce radio products that will be deployed in the Mercosur countries of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Opening ceremonies are scheduled in Campinas on September 9 to mark the inauguration. The opening of the factory located on the Rua Fernao Pompeu de Camargo , 999, marks the implementation of plans announced previously in March of this year when the facility was leased.
The Campinas factory will initially be dedicated to the final assembly and testing of Digital Microwave Corporation's XP4 product line of radios, which is noted worldwide for its cost effectiveness, compact size and ease of installation. The radios are an economical alternative to the deployment of wired network connections, such as fiber optics and copper, as new networks are established, and they are used extensively for the interconnection of base stations in cellular networks. XP4 radios operate over licensed frequencies ranging from 7 to 38 GHz in capacities of 2xE1 to E3. The XP4 product line also is available in frequencies of 15 to 38 GHz, at capacities of 4xDS-1 to DS-3, for use in North America.
The new Brazil factory is planned for sequential growth in production capacity over time. Initial plans target 400 terminals per month. The factory is working with Solectron in Sao Jose dos Campos as its preferred printed circuit assembly supplier. By calendar end 2000, it is anticipated that with growth in market demand for microwave radios at various frequencies and capacities, the factory production will grow, and that it will expand into production of other Digital Microwave Corporation products. The Company's microwave radio product line is recognized as one of the most extensive available from any one company in the world.
"As of the end of the Company's Fiscal 1999 in March of this year, more than 20% of the Company's revenues were from Latin America. The growth of telecommunications networks in this sector of our global business has allowed us to take this significant step in establishing this facility in Brazil," commented Charles D. Kissner, Digital Microwave Corporation Chairman and CEO.
"The selection of Campinas as the location of the plant allows us not only to locate close to many of the major telecommunications companies in Brazil, but also to take advantage of the transportation infrastructure supporting the Mercosur countries and the qualified work force in this area," added Reinaldo Morilha, Digital Microwave Corporation's Director General in Brazil.
