OK- I'm sitting here drinking hot lemon juice and honey -- and Dans' Maker's Mark, which probably will not be a big hit with Dan, but we don't have any cheap whiskey. I have a terrible sore throat and cough. and I strained my voice last night at choir becuase I was showing off on a descant. And God punished me for my hubris by taking my voice.

I hope he gives it back by Sunday; damned if I'm giving up this descant to anyone else.

I've been thinking about the basketball player, and I have a mixed reaction. Which means I agree with everybody as they talk, but then argue in my head later.

THere's a cheerleader in Fort Worth who was kicked off the squad permanently. She was caught smoking in the school parking lot. Now the irritating thing about this is the handbook for football players that came out this year changed the smoking rule to first offense- 10 day suspension.
WHen the girls' parents took it to the schoolboard, the school board said too bad.

On the one hand, I can see that it was a stupid thing to do, she shouldn't have done it. On the other, I have teenagers. And remember that article CH brought to our attention about the lagging brain development in adolescents? They really don't THINK about consequences yet- not the way adults do. So it seems to me, that we shouldn't be punishing so severely that it destroys their whole high school career, or takes them out of something that is productive and rewarding permanently. Suspend- ok. Or do community service as they did to CW for his online paper.

Now the drinking-- that's a tough one too, becuase he didn't take one experimental drink and become an alcoholic. He must have repeatedly made a bad choice. But again... what is the right and best thing for him? WIthout totally gutting consistency. There must be some way to satisfy both the god of discipline and the god of compassion.
