Sounds like the CD-ROM all-right.

When you re-started in DOS mode, chances are you don't have a real-mode CD-ROM driver that is being loaded that would give you access to your CD-ROM. I take it you have 2 drives or 2 partitions, so that's why E: would be the CD-ROM. If you type E: by itself do you get a "Invalid Drive Specification" as well?

If you can't get a real-mode CD-ROM driver in your CONFIG.SYS file for you to get CD-ROM access in DOS only mode, try extracting the file from a Dos prompt from within Windows. After the extraction, re-start in DOS mode and copy the file to the appropriate directory.
