I suggest we send a couple of carriers, and two amphibious assault groups.

Then you invade, and pacify, and pat yourself on the back, and go home. Then what happens? Are you going to build a credible government for East Timor, with the capacity to defend itself?

China will not be a military problem - Timor is way too far away - but they kill any chance of UN approval. Which means unilateral action. Are we ready for that?

If you dispatch those carriers today, how long will it take before they are on station? What will they bomb when they get there? How much of East Timor will be left when they arrive?

I wish the situation was as simple as you would like it to be.
