UMC 2303 closed @80.50 + 0.50 vol 88,602,213 Taiwan's TWSE Index gained 1.2 percent to 8124.93. Gains in U.S. computer-related shares fueled expectations that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and other contractors will export more to their biggest market. TSMC, which ships half of its chips to the U.S., gained 2.2 percent to NT$141.50. TSMC said yesterday that August sales jumped to a fourth monthly record, rising 84.5 percent on year to NT$7.0 billion, meeting expectations. United Microelectronics Corp., TSMC's closest rival, rose 1.9 percent to NT$81.50. It said sales gained 77.9 percent over the same period to NT$2.5 billion, its second-best monthly total.
