American strategic interest IMO includes supporting peoples fighting to be free everywhere

I couldn't agree more. And if we're going to send carriers, there's lots of other good stuff that we can do out there.

If we stopped off on the way to liberate the Tahitians, Kanaks, and other Pacific islanders who live under French rule we could make a powerful stroke for liberty and a nuclear test ban. While we're around Timor we might as well set Irian Jaya and Aceh free, and the Filipino Muslims have been getting beat on by the Catholics for years; they want independence, let's give it to them. From there we can go south and take care of the New Zealand Maori and the Australian aborigines, both of which have been sorely abused and are badly in need of some freedom.

From here we have a choice. We could go north: the Shans don't want to be Burmese, and we all know about Tibet. Those are inconvenient for the carriers, though, so why don't we wander over and set up a Tamil state in Sri Lanka. From there we could head west, and I can't even begin to count the opportunities for Good Works that we would encounter by the time we got to the Kurds.

It would be a wonderful world if we just had the guts.
